The City of Anaheim, which is located in Orange County, operates under a council-manager government which its city charter mandates. The city council consists of five members who are voted for and elected by the pubic for terms of four years. The council hires a manager to run the day-to-day operations of the city. Anaheim is also well represented within the Federal, State and local governments; with three representative members in the United States House of Representatives, three representative members within the California State Senate, three representative members within the California State Assembly and two representative members within the Orange County Board of Supervisors.
Anaheim is home to very successful professional sports teams. The Anaheim Ducks captured the Stanley Cup Championship of professional mens hockey in 2007 and the Los Angeles Angles of Anaheim brought home a World Series Championship of Major League Baseball in 2002. The Angels were involved in a bit of controversy when their ownership group decided it wanted to change the name of the team to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. It is believed that they made the change in order to appeal to a broader audience of fans. There was a provision in their lease with the ballpark the team plays in to include the words “of Anaheim” which is why the team decided on such an extended title but the city council felt that while technically the team was following the mandates the name change violated the spirit of the agreement and sued the team in Orange County Superior Court. The city however lost that initial jury trial and then decided to file an appealwith the California Court of Appeal; however, they lost that decision as the Appeals Court sided with the Angels. The city finally gave up the fight over the name change and the team is now continued to be called the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
The City of Anaheim is also one of the most popular cities in all of the United States. Anaheim ranks first in total population within Orange County, tenth in total population in California and is within the top sixty in total population within the entire United States.
